We won’t hold South-West congress, says PDP

Olusola Fabiyi, Abuja The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has said that it would not hold the South-West zonal congress of the party originally scheduled for Saturday.

The party said that it was recalling its officers already sent to Akure, the Ondo State capital, where the congress was originally scheduled to hold.

National Secretary of the party, Prof. Wale Oladipo, stated this in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja on Friday.

Oladipo said the decision to stop the congress was because of the order by Justice Ibrahim Buba of a Federal High Court in Lagos, which restrained the party from going ahead with its zonal congress.

Apart from Akure, another faction of the party had planned to hold a separate zonal congress in Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State.

But in positive answer to an ex parte application brought before him on Thursday by the incumbent PDP South-West Zonal Secretary, Chief ‘Pegba Otemolu, Justice Buba restrained the party from going ahead with the scheduled congress.

The judge said the order would subsist until the final determination of Otemolu’s main suit. Oladipo said that as a law abiding party, the PDP would not disobey the court order.

He said, “We are a law-abiding party. I have been served the court order and as a respondent in the case, I’m telling you that we are not going to flout the order of the court.

“I’m also aware that the Independent National Electoral Commission will also not be at the congress. “As a matter of fact, we are withdrawing our officers who have been sent to conduct the congress. We will stay action on it until the case if determined by the court.”

Increase minimum wage, Murray-Bruce tells Buhari

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce Senator Ben Murray-Bruce has called on President Buhari to either increase minimum wage for workers or excuse them from paying tax to cushion the effects of the recent fuel price hike. Murray-Bruce made the appeal via tweeter late Thursday night. “I appeal to @MBuhari to consider the immense suffering in Nigeria and increase minimum wage to help workers cope with increased fuel price,” he tweeted. “Either @Mbuhari increases the minimum wage to help masses cope with increased fuel price or he should allow minimum wage earners pay no tax.” He justified the call for minimum wage increase, saying the President and his cabinet, don’t buy fuel with their money, yet earn more than minimum wage workers who do. He accused the government of first reneging on its promise ₦5000 allowance to poor Nigerians and further adding to the suffering by increasing the fuel price. Already FG ruled out the ₦5k allowance it promised poor Nigerians. Instead of assisting them the FG wants to take from them via fuel price. — Ben Murray-Bruce (@benmurraybruce) May 12, 2016 Increase minimum wage because the President and his cabinet, dont buy fuel with their money, yet earn more than minimum wage workers who do! — Ben Murray-Bruce (@benmurraybruce) May 12, 2016 Either @Mbuhariincreases the minimum wage to help masses cope with increased fuel price or he should allow minimum wage earners pay no tax. — Ben Murray-Bruce (@benmurraybruce) May 12, 2016 I appeal to @MBuharito consider the immense suffering in Nigeria and increase minimum wage to help workers cope with increased fuel price. — Ben Murray-Bruce (@benmurraybruce) May 12, 2016 source: punch

Fuel Now Available at N145 per litre, APC Leader Tinubu Reacts

National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has described the decision of the President Buhari-led Federal Government to remove petrol subsidy as courageous. Tinubu said though the decision was a difficult one, it would ultimately become beneficial to the generality of the people instead of enriching the pockets of a few Nigerians, who enjoyed the fraud of the subsidy regime. In fact, the subsidy removal worked like magic in Lagos and some Nigerian states on Thursday as long queues disappeared at petrol filling stations, we visited many filling stations and they were free. At filling stations in Ikeja, Mushin and Ikorodu Road, among others, petrol was being sold. Some known for “good metering” had queues of about five to 10 vehicles. Others were empty and motorists drove in and out freely. Few filling stations were not selling because, the attendants said, they have no fuel. As expected, some commercial buses and taxis have increased their fares to cover for the new price. The removal of subsidy was praised by many Nigerians, particularly those in the manufacturing and operators of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as they need not labour to access fuel, there are concerns that with the state of the Naira, some marketers may still sell above N145 per litre. But spokesman ofMobil Oil Plc,Akin Fatunke said the N145 per litre template is enough for any marketer who is not greedy. According to him, the government factored the cost of forex acquisition, logistics needs and marketers’ margins into the new price. The new price can only increase if there is a major economic depression, which will make the price of dollar soar far more than it is now or if the price of crude rises very high. He said: “At this point in time, if we put everything together in terms of Platts, logistics and other things, the new price is okay. Any reasonable, efficient and proactive businessman can make profit with the new price template despite the cost of securing forex, importing and clearing from the ports.” Any marketer who sells above N145 should be seen as a cheat. No excuse to cheat Nigerians anymore.
