The Federal government has indicated plans to gradually remove fuel subsidy by 2016. This was made known by the Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu while appearing before the Joint National Assembly Committee on Finance, Appropriation and National Planning yesterday Dec. 14. During his interaction with the senators, Kachukwu, stated that the subsidy regime which was at over N1 trillion in 2015 was no longer be sustainable. He said the plan was to gradually remove the subsidy by first reverting to the old pump price of N97 per litre “The government doesn't need to fund subsidy. There is energy around the removal of subsidy. Most Nigerians we talk to today would say, that's where to go. I have since left the dictionary of subsidy by going to price modulation, which is a bit more technical. Price of refined products today is N87. It was N97 before it was removed and we really have to go back to that because we don't really have the finance to remove it. There are lots of safety barometer between the N87 and N97 per litre regime between which government does not have to fund subsidy. Yet the prices would be fairly close to what it used to be today. That is the first mechanism we are going to work on. It is when that mechanism fails that we will begin to look at a total subsidy exit. We believe we could achieve that."he said Source: ThisdayMonday, 14 December 2015

Osun State Police Command, has arraigned six students of St. Marks Anglican High School and Adenle Middle School in Osogbo before an Osogbo Magistrates’ Court for allegedly attacking their teachers with cutlasses and clubs. The students, suspected to be cultists, had on Friday, 4 December, 2015, invaded the schools premises where they allegedly chased their teachers with guns and cutlasses. But when they were arraigned before Magistrate (Mrs) Adejumoke Olowolagba, the pupils were accused of causing breach of the peace by disturbing school activities on 7 December, 2015 at St. Marks Anglican High School, Osogbo. The accused persons, aged 18 years, are Adewunmi Olusegun, Ajibola Toheeb, Ganiyu Sodiq, Adegbite Femi, Atoyebi Nurudeen and Adepoju Yusuf. The charge sheet obtained by Saturday Tribune reads in part, “That you (accused persons) and others now at large, on the 7th day of December 2015 at St. Marks Anglican High School, Osogbo, in the Osogbo Magisterial District did conspire together to commit misdemeanour, to wit, conduct likely to cause breach of the peace by disturbing the school activities.” The police prosecutor, Mr Taiwo Adegoke, contended that the pupils had committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 517(d) and 249(d) of the Criminal Code Cap 34, Vol. II, Law of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003. But the six accused persons pleaded not guilty to the two counts pressed against them. However, the accused persons who were represented by an amicus curiae pleaded with the court to grant them bail in a liberal term, stressing that they were presumed innocent of the alleged offence until the prosecution proved otherwise. Magistrate Olowolagba granted the six accused persons bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties each in like amount. She ordered that one of the sureties must provide tax clearance certificate. The case was adjourned till February 15, 2016 for mention.Pupils Attack Teachers With Guns In Osun
Some teachers at Anglican High School and Adenle Middle School in Osogbo narrowly escaped being shot when some cultists invaded the school compound and chased out teachers. The school which houses student population of about 7,000 is made up of Anglican High School 1-5 and some students of Adenle Middle School. Our correspondent gathered on Thursday that the crisis was caused by some students who knew they could not pass the qualifying examination the state wanted to conduct to select those whose WAEC fee would be paid by the state government. But some said the crisis started last Friday when a student identified as Toib and his colleagues stormed the school premises with dane guns to attack a member of Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme ( O’ YES cadet) who they had issues with. A teacher told our correspondent that Toib and his gang chased a female Home Economics teacher out of the class when the trouble started. The invasion of the school forced other students and workers to flee. The Friday invasion was said to have forced the school authorities to invite policemen but the cultists mobilised more members and attacked the police even on Monday. The development, it was gathered led to the instruction given to the teachers by the Nigeria Union of Teachers that all teachers should stay away from school because of the threat to their lives. It was further learnt that the Osun State Ministry of Education had also closed down the school to prevent any death. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Lawrence Oyeniran, when contacted declined to make any comment on the crisis. He said, ” This is a subject I don’t want to talk about. Maybe you can see the deputy governor and ask her your questions.” However, the NUT chairman, Mr. Amudah Wakeel, when contacted said the crisis was so serious, adding that some of the teachers were lucky to have escaped being shot dead by the rampaging cultists.
