Lautech students appeal to Aregbesola, Ajimobi to reopen institution

Some group of students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso and Osogbo campuses have appealed to Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State and his Oyo State counterpart, Abiola Ajimobi, to reopen the institution.

The convener of the group, Eze Raymond, made the call on Friday in Osogbo in statement made available to newsmen. Raymond described the closure of the university due to nonpayment of salaries of the lecturers as “unfortunate”.

He appealed to stakeholders in the education sector to prevail on the two governors to reopen the university.

Raymond also appealed to Governor Aregbesola to pay the 12 months salary arrears government owed the lecturers. He appealed to Governor Ajimobi to settle the six months salary arrears Oyo State Government owed the lecturers. He urged the governors to pay the Earned Academic Allowance of the lecturers, which they claimed was paid last in 2012.

Raymond said: “We urge the two governors to settle our lecturers to enable our university reopen for the harmattan semester examination. “Programme that should ordinarily complete in five years is being delayed to seven years due to incessant strike occasioned by the inability of the government to pay workers salary. “We appeal to all stakeholders in the education sector to intervene.

“We also appeal to the two governors to come together and find urgent solution to the issues that led to the closure of the university.” The university is jointly owned and financed by Osun and Oyo State Governments.

Juventus Complete sign Higuain for €90m from Napoli

The Serie A champions have completed the signing of the Argentine forward and will pay the Partenopei €90 million for last season's top scorer in the Italian league Juventus have completed the signing of Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli for €90 million, it has been confirmed.

The Argentine striker has long been linked with a move to the Serie A champions, having already agreed personal terms earlier in July.

The 28-year-old has agreed a four-year contract with Massimiliano Allegri's side, which will see him pocket €7m per year.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis had told Juve director Giuseppe Marotta that they would have to match Higuain's release clause to sign the forward, which was believed to be €94.7m, but that clause was only for the player himself to buy his way out of the club. The clause for any potential buyers was set at €90m.

Juve have matched that fee, which will be paid in two instalments of €45m, and have sent the contracts to the Lega Serie A, who have listed Higuain as a Bianconeri player.

Higuain, who scored 36 goals in 35 Serie A games last season, joined Napoli in 2013 and was tied to the club until June 2018. He follows the likes of Miralem Pjanic, Marko Pjaca, Medhi Benatia and Dani Alves in joining the Turin side this summer.
